Monday 28th May 2012 – walking **** sunny

We decided that although our overnight spot in Prades wasn’t the most scenic we have had it is a good one to remember when we come up from La Francqui to the Pyrenees again because it is handy for the main road, and the Super U and is easy to find :) We visited the Super U and did a very big shop because we haven’t really got anything left at all! Set off on the road leading across the National Park towards Axat. We have been to lovely Axat before but not on this road. The first place we came to was Mosset which was a very nice old village built on top of hill. We got out and had a walk - very quaint and with amazing views. The newly elected MP for the Pyrenees area was having a meet and greet with cheese and wine in the centre of the village. We have seen her picture on posters all over the place – have to say she looks better than the photo which does her no favours! Carried on until we saw a ‘walk of 5 senses’ sign at the entrance to a forest track. We went a few hundred metres and parked by another spectacular waterfall and had our lunch. Scrambled up the vertical waterfall for a considerable while – the footpath started and seemed to disappear (don’t think we ever found the 5 senses one!) but we persevered over the rocks and undergrowth :) On the way down we saw a deer having a drink and then crossing the waterfall which is unbelievable when you see the strength of the water - It is so violent. May must be optimum waterfall month as we have never seen so much water as on this holiday! Drove up the road surrounded by forest and pasture with the literally hundreds of different wild flowers. Such a brilliant sight :) We stopped at the Col de Jau for a drink and there was an obvious footpath going straight up quite a steep hill although no signs at all?? I started off going for a walk with my camera but couldn’t resist so started to climb up. It was hard going but stopped off on route to take pics of the cows and flowers!!! When I reached what I thought was the top the fence I was following just keep going but I made it to the pile of rocks – added one and then headed over to a rocky crag with great views all around even if a bit breezy!!! Mag had decided to walk up to meet me so when I got back to the van she wasn’t there. I sat in the sun and when she came down we laughed and couldn’t make out how we had missed each other but at least we both went to the top! Back to the van for tea then we walked along the forest track near where we are parked (have decided to stay here tonight) and saw another deer. I seem to be the one to spot these things – Mag is too busy looking at her feet so she doesn’t trip up!
